How to Check Website Speed: A Practical Guide for Bali Business Owners

Cara Cek Kecepatan Website

Website speed is one of the most direct factors affecting both Google rankings and visitor conversion rates. Checking your Bali business website’s speed accurately — and understanding what the numbers mean — is the first step in any performance improvement effort.

Why Speed Testing Matters for Bali Businesses

Page speed affects your business in two measurable ways:

Google rankings. Google has used page speed as a ranking factor since 2010, and in 2021 formalized this through Core Web Vitals as an explicit ranking signal. Slower websites rank lower, all else being equal — meaning your slow website is actively costing you search visibility.

Visitor conversion. Every second of loading time increases the likelihood that a visitor leaves before your page finishes loading. Studies consistently show bounce rates increase 32% as page load time goes from 1 to 3 seconds. For a Bali villa website generating Rp 25 million in monthly direct bookings, a 1-second improvement in load time could meaningfully increase that figure through lower abandonment rates.

The Right Tools for Speed Testing

PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev). Google’s own tool — the most important one to check. Provides both lab scores (measured by Google’s analysis engine) and field data (actual performance measured from real users of your website). The mobile score is typically more relevant than desktop for most Bali business websites, since the majority of visitors arrive on mobile.

What the scores mean: 90–100 (green) is Good; 50–89 (orange) is Needs Improvement; 0–49 (red) is Poor. Most unoptimized Bali WordPress websites score 30–60 on mobile.

GTmetrix (gtmetrix.com). A third-party tool that complements PageSpeed Insights with a detailed waterfall chart — a visual representation of exactly which elements load in what order and how long each takes. GTmetrix makes it easy to identify the specific “bottleneck” slowing your page: often a large hero image or a slow-loading third-party script.

Test from a Singapore server location (the closest available to Bali in most test tools) for the most representative results for your actual Bali-based visitors.

Google Search Console — Core Web Vitals report. Unlike PageSpeed Insights (which tests a single moment in a controlled environment), the Core Web Vitals report in Google Search Console shows real-world performance data from actual visitors to your website over the past 28 days. This is the authoritative source for how your site actually performs for real users. Access it under Experience → Core Web Vitals in your Search Console dashboard.

Key Metrics to Read

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP). How long until the largest visible element loads. For most Bali hospitality websites, this is the hero image. Target: under 2.5 seconds. If this is above 4 seconds, image optimization is your first priority.

Total Blocking Time (TBT) / Interaction to Next Paint (INP). How responsive the page is to user interaction. Affected primarily by JavaScript. High TBT/INP often indicates too many plugins loading scripts simultaneously.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS). How much the page layout shifts while loading. Affects user experience — content jumping around as elements load is disorienting. Target: under 0.1.

Time to First Byte (TTFB). How long before your server sends the first byte of response. Affected by hosting quality and server performance. High TTFB (above 600ms) often indicates hosting that needs upgrading.

Testing Correctly

Always test in an incognito/private browser window — cached assets in a normal window will make your site appear faster than it is for new visitors. Test multiple pages, not just the homepage — your villa booking page or tour landing page may perform differently than the homepage.

Test on mobile, not just desktop. Mobile scores are almost always lower (and more important). The Bali visitor looking up your restaurant while already in Bali is on mobile — that’s the experience that matters.
