Domain Authority (DA) is a metric developed by Moz that predicts how likely a website is to rank in search engine results. Scored on a scale of 1–100, higher DA generally correlates with stronger Google rankings — though it’s a predictive metric, not a ranking factor that Google itself uses directly.
Understanding DA and improving it is relevant for Bali businesses investing in SEO, because the underlying factors that improve DA — quality content and quality backlinks — are the same factors that improve actual Google rankings.
What Determines Domain Authority
DA is primarily determined by the quality and quantity of backlinks pointing to your website. Backlinks are links from other websites to yours — and in Google’s algorithm (and Moz’s DA metric), not all links are equal.
Link quality over quantity. A single link from a high-authority publication (a regional travel magazine, an established tourism blog, or a major news site) contributes more to DA than 50 links from low-quality directory sites. The link from a relevant, trusted source signals to search engines: “this website has been vouched for by someone credible.”
Topical relevance. Links from websites covering related topics (other Bali tourism sites, travel blogs, hospitality industry publications) carry more weight than links from unrelated sites. A Bali villa website linked from a travel magazine’s Bali destination guide is more valuable than a link from an unrelated business directory.
Link anchor text. The clickable text of a link (the anchor text) provides context about what the linked page covers. Natural anchor text variation — some links using your business name, some using descriptive terms, some generic — indicates natural link building patterns.
Practical Ways to Increase Domain Authority for Bali Businesses
Publish linkable content. The most sustainable backlink strategy is creating content that other websites want to link to. For Bali businesses, this typically means: comprehensive destination guides that travel bloggers reference, original research or data about Bali’s tourism or market, and high-quality local resource pages that journalists and bloggers link to for context.
Guest posting on relevant publications. Contributing articles to established Bali travel blogs, Indonesian business publications, and industry-specific sites in exchange for an author bio link builds relevant, high-quality backlinks. The key: write genuinely useful content for the target publication’s audience, not thinly disguised promotional content.
Local citations and directory listings. Ensuring your business is correctly listed on TripAdvisor, Yelp, Google Business Profile, Booking.com (link in profile), and relevant Indonesian business directories builds a baseline of legitimate referral links. These are relatively low DA individually but contribute to a natural link profile.
Media and PR. Coverage in Bali-focused media — lifestyle magazines, tourism publications, Bali Advertiser, major travel blogs — generates high-value backlinks from established domains. Pitching stories about your business’s unique angle, founding story, or community involvement to these publications is a legitimate earned media strategy.
Supplier and partner links. If your business has suppliers, partners, or associations that list their members online, ensure your website is correctly linked. Villa owners often qualify for links from their management company’s portfolio pages, Bali tourism association directories, and accommodation booking platforms.
What Doesn’t Work (and Why)
Buying backlinks from link farms or private blog networks is the most common black-hat SEO tactic. It can produce short-term DA increases but results in Google penalties — either algorithmic de-ranking or manual action that can remove your website from search results entirely. The recovery from a Google backlink penalty takes months and significant investment. Avoid entirely.
DA typically improves slowly — 2–4 points per year is considered good progress for a focused backlink strategy. Promises of rapid DA increases (“+15 points in 30 days”) are almost universally achieved through tactics that will ultimately harm rankings rather than help them.
